Lamington National Park is located in Queensland, Australia. It is situated approximately 100km south of Brisbane (the capital city of Queensland) and is part of a mountainous area known as the MacPherson Ranges. The park covers an area of 20 500 ha and belongs within the Albert and Beaudesert local Shires.
The majority of visitors access the northern end of the park through two entrances: Binna Burra in the east and Green Mountains in the west. Access is by car or bus. At both Green Mountains and Binna Burra, there are excellent facilities for day trippers, as well as camping grounds and other accomodation.
The National Park is named after Lord Lamington; the governor of Queensland when the park was declared in July, 1915; at this time the park covered an area of 18 800 ha.
Lamington is reknown throughout Australia and the world for many years due to the size of the park, the unique flora and fauna; and the sheer beauty of the mountains and rainforest.
The global significance of the area was recognised in 1994, when Lamington was listed as a World Heritage Area; along with Main Range, Mt. Chingee and parts of Springbrook, Mt. Mistake and Mt. Barney National Parks. These parks, and some in N.S.W. now form what is known as the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves Australia (CERRA), this was first listed as World Heritage Property in 1988 (Queensland parks were added in 1994). |
